Quebrando el silencio ("Breaking the Silence", Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain, 1996) was the first and only album released by the Gran Canaria group "Wayra," originating from the town of Vecindario, in the southeast of the island. "Wayra" (which began its musical journey as a Canary Islands folklore group called "Tabefe") was an all-female ensemble, with a vocal emphasis, interested in Latin American sounds. It ended up including two South American wind instrumentalists (one of whom was me) and dedicated itself to performing well-known songs from the Andean folklore repertoire and the Nueva Canción.
When recording the CD, I ended up playing the panpipes for all the tracks, for the sake of consistency in the sound. In addition to reciting the spoken part of "Digo la mazamorra"... just because of accentual issues. "Wayra" was part of a very interesting cultural movement that, back in the '90s, included many other Canary Islands formations in search of identities and fusions.
